The Maxi dress is always a hit come summertime, and summer isn’t over just yet. It’s strapless, it’s flowing…what is there not to love? It certainly makes getting ready easier when you only have one article of clothing to choose, but how versatile is this dress? This is where accessories come in. Lovers of all things fashion our team at Rent Frock Repeat know how to accessorize a dress for any occasion. Finish the look with appropriate hair and make-up and you’ve got one adaptable dress–so, do not stash your maxi away anytime soon.

One of our favourite maxi dresses is the Cactus Flower Jaquard Strapless Gown by Tracy Reese. It’s trendy print is what really makes this dress unique. The vivid shades of green, coral, yellow and purple pop. These colours paired with the cactus print make it perfect for summer. It contains a quirky keyhole back with bow tie detail. This dress also has pockets, which is always a nice touch. It is your typical maxi-length, but wears as a full gown on shorter women. This dress fits beautifully on a number of body types including: hourglass, straight and narrow, pear, full bust, apple, and even baby on board.

While this dress is a stand-out in a sea of neutral coloured maxi dresses you’ll still want to accessorize. Too often enough you see women wearing maxi dresses with nothing more. Simplicity is good, but we believe the right accessories make all the difference. Adding these little details is what makes the perfect ensemble for a specific event.

For a casual outing, such as shopping or a backyard party, adding a fitted vest is an unconventional touch. It pairs great with the flowing nature of this dress. This ‘Jodi’ Fitted Denim Vest by Mavi Jeans offers a fitted silhouette while still appearing edgy with it’s frayed edges and bleached-out wash.

The length and quality of this dress hardly look casual, so dressing-down your footwear is crucial. Anything with a heel will look too fancy. Aim for a simple, white shoe whether it be a pair of flats or a slip-on style shoe. These Vans True White Classic Slip On Trainers are stylish and comfortable. For a full days shopping these are a lifesaver.

An everyday hoop earring will be the only accessory you need for this dress. We like these Gold-Plated Horn Hoop Earrings by Isabel Marant for a polished- looking accent. If you’re going with the jean vest you’ll want to avoid looking too grungy.

Make-up can be light during the day. Add a natural-looking bronzer and some highlighter for a dewy glow. Finish this fresh look with a tinted lip colour like this Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment with SPF 15 from Fresh. As for hair, a sleek top bun would showcase that fresh face and gorgeous earrings. A polished blow-out would also work.

Making this dress work appropriate is a little more difficult due to its length. There is seomthing about a full length dress that screams gown and therefore, overly fancy. The trick to this is breaking the dress up, so it seems like a matching top and skirt. A wrap blazer is great for achieving this. The grey colour on this DONNA KARAN Cross Drape Jersey Blazer is pure sophistication.

Aside from the grey of the blazer we still want to match the dress as much as possible. The colours of the dress aren’t apart of your typical work-appropriate palette, so toning them down with neutral colours is important. For accessories a black pedant such as this Pastiche Necklace in Silver with Square Jet CZ Pendant matches effortlessly.

Keep footwear black as well and avoid an open-toe shoe. A closed-toe will look professional while an open-toe looks too summer oriented and casual. These Dune Black Ora Leather High Heel Ankle Boots are sassy yet sophisticated.

Make-up should be fairly low key with a focus on the lipstick. A soft, matte red would be striking. We like this Matte Revolution Lipstick in ‘Bond Girl’ by Charlotte Tilbury because it’s not too red. Applied sparingly this lip colour offers subtle colour. Lastly, hair would look fabulous in a low, side bun with some sort of braid incorporated.
