We have spent the last week runway-watching  at  |FAT| Fashion Art Toronto, also known as Alternative Fashion Week.  We were hoping to discover some new emerging talent that hasn’t been showcased on the runways this year.  RfR has proudly been  one of the first few places where you can get your hands on Canadian designers like Sarah Stevenson, Emogene Couture, Caitlin Power and even our latest addition to the wardrobe, Sarah Haunts.  We were hoping to discover some unique styles that you  wouldn’t  find anywhere else and get ideas for new collections to add to the RfR closet. Take a peek at some of the hottest talents hand picked off the runway; ones we predict we are going to start seeing more of in the future.

Sakhuja

Power and  feminine strength are expressed through Indian-influenced separates, cut outs and crop tops with exotic details. Natasha Sakhuja, a self taught Indian-Canadian designer, has designed red carpet  looks for local celebrities like Degrassi’s Melinda Shankar. Natasha launched her first collection in 2010 and has been growing and developing her craft quickly;  she co-designed a 2nd collection that debuted at FAT as well.  Her unique silhouettes  that pair geometric cutouts with long flowing draping  are modern and progressive, with elements paying homage to her Indian  heritage.

Lazar Couture

Maria Manceva, designer of Lazar Couture,  presented a collection  that was probably the furthest from the pretty, voluminous tulle gowns she presented in her debut collection last year.  The chic, sophisticated, powerful woman she captured was wrapped in leather and propelled by a  fierce force to be reckoned with. The Canadian  made a Rock ‘n’ Classy collection, showcasing the amazing versatility of leather, combining perforated leather with leather palettes, and mimicking sequins under the lights. The all leather collection was broken up with structured white tops,  softening the edgy nightlife leather to make for more of a chic daytime look. We love the perforated leather look and love how this Lazar Couture collection found the  perfect balance between edgy attitude and  timeless elegance.

Copious Fashion

Copious Fashion by Carissa McCraig had us mad for plaid with full voluminous skirts in bright, eye popping patterns. The collection, appropriately named Cakes and Ashes, is inspired by  Alfred Hitchcock’s duality in his portrayal of female characters; beautiful, sensual and elegant with a dark  alter ego. Feminine and flirty silhouettes are created using hard fabrics like tartan, and  an edgy  yet elegant damask. Leather and jersey are casually mixed into the collection; when paired with tartan,  the look tip toes on the edge of pretty punk.

Baby Steinberg

Baby Steinberg has returned after spending a few years away from the Toronto fashion world  developing and growing her designs in Brazil.  The Red Carpet collection uses reclaimed materials to create glamorous gowns fit for a princess.  The latest collection is based around intricately detailed and  delicately  crafted bodices with long flowing full tulle skirts. The types of  materials being utilized are unique and left us wanting to get a closer look. Baby Steinberg has created  beautifully crafted details utilising unique alternatives to traditional beads and sequins, which we would  normally see adorning such radiant gowns.  The sustainability and resourcefulness of the repurposed fibres is right in line with our mantra of #LessStuffMoreLife.

Feel free to comment, tweet us, or post to our Facebook page letting us know  if you are a fan of any of the looks featured. Lets us know of any emerging designers  you think we should be on look out for.

Stay Fabulous
